Phases of the moon

👇 Get new sketches each week
Everyone knows a crescent and a full moon, but it’s also good to know that a gibbous moon is when a crescent of shadow eats into the bright circle and that the hardest moon to see is a new one.
When the lit area of the moon gets lighter day by day, the moon’s in its waxing phase (growing), and when the moon darkens day by day, it’s in the waning phase (shrinking).
A handy rhyme to know whether the moon will get lighter or darker is “If it’s light on the right, it’s gonna get bright.”
Remarkably, we only ever see one side of the moon. To see the far side, you’d need to get in a rocket.
For interest: a gibbous moon is from the latin gibbus, which means "hump".
